Year-Round Dog Waste Removal: What Happens in Rain, Snow and Summer Heat

Dogs need to go outside every day of the year, whether it's a sticky August afternoon, a soaking spring rain or one of those rare Delmarva snow days. That means dog waste keeps coming year-round, too. A lot of people assume pooper scooper services pause in the off-season. Ours doesn't.

Here's how year-round service works, what happens in different kinds of weather, and why staying on a regular schedule pays off.

Why year-round service matters

When pickup stops for the winter, waste builds up for weeks or months. By spring, the yard needs a big cleanup, the lawn has dead spots, and spring rain has had plenty of chances to wash waste toward ditches and creeks. (We cover that in spring thaw yard cleanup.) Staying on schedule all year means you never face that "spring surprise."

Rain

Rain is a normal part of life on the Eastern Shore, and a little rain doesn't stop us. Picking up before and after wet stretches is actually one of the most helpful times to do it, because waste sitting in the yard during heavy rain is what washes into storm drains and waterways. See how dog waste affects the Chesapeake Bay.

If there's severe weather, like a thunderstorm with lightning or a coastal storm, we'll put safety first and adjust the schedule.

Snow and ice

Delmarva doesn't get a lot of snow compared to places farther north, but it does happen. Even with snow on the ground, most waste can still be found and scooped, since dogs usually go in the same areas and waste tends to sit on top of or just under fresh snow.

When conditions make a visit unsafe, like icy steps or roads, we'll let you know and get you back on the schedule as soon as we can. If waste does get buried under a heavy snowfall, we'll catch it as the snow melts.

Fall leaves

Fall is beautiful on the Shore, but fallen leaves hide waste. We work through leaf-covered yards carefully, checking along fence lines, under trees and in the corners where leaves pile up.

Summer heat

Summer is when regular pickup matters most for comfort. Heat makes waste smell more and draws flies, which is the last thing you want near the grill or the kiddie pool. In beach towns like Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach, summer is also when vacation rentals are busiest. See our post for vacation rental hosts.

Some households choose to increase their service frequency in summer and ease back in winter. With no contracts, that's easy to do.

Daylight and timing

We service yards Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 8 PM. Our routes are planned by area, and service times can shift with weather, routing and seasonal daylight. Shorter winter days mean visits may happen at different times than in summer. Either way, you'll get a text when we're on the way, and a photo of your closed gate when we leave.

Questions about year-round service

Do you charge more in winter?

Your price is based on your number of dogs, your schedule and your yard, not the season.

What if it snows on my service day?

If the roads and yard are safe, we'll still come. Most waste can still be found in light snow. If conditions aren't safe, we'll let you know and get you back on the schedule as soon as we can.

Can I switch to a lighter schedule in winter?

Yes. There are no contracts, so you can adjust your frequency through your client portal or by calling or texting us. Just keep in mind that the longer waste sits, the bigger the cleanup when spring arrives.

Do you still send gate photos in bad weather?

Yes. Every visit ends with your gate closed, latched and photographed, rain or shine.

Why consistency wins

The biggest benefit of year-round service isn't any single visit. It's never having to catch up. A yard that's cleaned every week all year never smells, never has dead patches from old waste and never needs a big spring rescue. For busy families, that consistency is the whole point: one less thing to think about, in every season.

Holidays and travel

Winter holidays mean visitors, travel and busy schedules. If you're traveling, your yard can still be serviced while you're away, since we don't need you to be home. If you're hosting, a clean yard means guests and their dogs can use it without anyone having to watch where they step. And if your plans change, you can adjust your service in your client portal.

Tips for winter dog owners

  • Keep a path shoveled to your dog's usual spot after a snow. It keeps the dog going in one area, which makes cleanup easier.
  • Leave gates easy to open. Ice can freeze latches. Let us know if we should use a different gate.
  • Watch for paw care. Ice-melt products can irritate paws. Ask your vet about pet-safe options.
