One of the most common questions we hear is "How often do I really need this?" There's no single right answer for every home, but there is a right answer for yours, and it mostly comes down to three things: how many dogs you have, how you use your yard, and how clean you want it to stay.
The short answer
For most households, weekly is the sweet spot. It keeps the yard consistently clean, waste never sits long enough to damage the grass or smell, and each visit stays quick.
But here's how each option compares.
Twice a week
Best for: homes with three or more dogs, large breeds, families with young kids who are always in the yard, or anyone who wants the yard spotless all the time.
Twice-weekly service means waste never has more than a few days to build up. It's the cleanest option, and for busy multi-dog homes it can be the only way to keep up.
Weekly
Best for: most homes with one or two dogs.
A week's worth of waste is manageable, it doesn't have time to break down into the lawn, and the yard is reliably usable. Weekly service also tends to be the best value per visit, because there's less to collect each time. We explain why in how much a pooper scooper service costs.
Every other week
Best for: one small dog, a yard that doesn't get much use, or households on a tighter budget.
Two weeks of waste is noticeably more than one, especially in summer heat, so the yard will have more visible buildup between visits. For a single small dog, though, it can work well.
Monthly
Best for: very light use, or as a "reset" between your own pickups.
A month is a long time for waste to sit. It can start damaging the lawn, it can smell in warm weather, and rain has more chances to carry it off. Monthly service works best as a deep clean on top of some regular pickup of your own.
One-time cleanup
Best for: a spring cleanup, getting ready for a party, a move-out, or getting the house ready to sell.
A one-time cleanup resets the yard. If you like the result, you can switch to a recurring schedule anytime.
Things that should push you toward more frequent service
- More dogs. Each dog adds up fast.
- Kids in the yard. Little ones play close to the ground. See parasites and bacteria in dog waste.
- Summer. Heat makes waste smell more and draws flies.
- A small yard. Less space means waste is concentrated in fewer spots.
- A wet yard or one near water. On Delmarva, lots of yards drain toward ditches and creeks. See how dog waste affects the Bay.
- Entertaining. If you host a lot, you want the yard ready at a moment's notice.
Things that can let you stretch it out
- One small dog
- A large yard where the dog uses one area
- You do some pickup yourself between visits
A quick way to decide
If you're still on the fence, try this: on a normal week, count how many times you notice waste in the yard by the weekend. If it's more than you'd want guests or kids to see, weekly or twice-weekly service is the right call. If the yard still looks clean after a week, every other week may be fine.
Another good test is the "barefoot test." Would you walk across your yard barefoot on a summer evening? If the answer is "not a chance," it's time to pick up more often.
What changes with the seasons on Delmarva
Spring: wet weather and growing grass make waste harder to spot and easier to wash away. A big cleanup after winter followed by weekly service keeps the lawn healthy as it greens up. See spring thaw yard cleanup.
Summer: heat, humidity and flies make waste much more noticeable. Families are outside more, too. This is when many people choose more frequent service.
Fall: falling leaves hide waste, especially under trees and along fence lines.
Winter: waste can freeze in place and pile up under snow. Staying on schedule all winter keeps you from facing a huge mess in March.
Common questions
Does more frequent service cost more overall?
More visits means a higher monthly total, but each visit is usually less expensive because there's less waste to collect. Your quote shows both so you can compare.
Can I combine my own pickup with a service?
Yes. Some people pick up quick messes during the week and let a service handle the thorough cleanup on a regular schedule.
What a Pawscapers visit includes, at any frequency
Whatever schedule you choose, every visit looks the same. You'll get a text when we're on the way. We clean front, back and side yards, flower beds, mulch and rock areas, patios and dog runs. We double-bag the waste and leave it in your trash can. Then we check that your gate is closed and latched, and send you a photo of it. The only thing that changes with frequency is how much waste builds up between visits.
You're not locked in
With Pawscapers there are no contracts. You can start weekly, try every other week, and switch whenever you want through your client portal or by calling or texting us. Some households bump up their frequency in summer and ease off in winter. (Yes, we work year-round. See year-round dog waste removal.)
